August 25, 2010 by Meklit Berhan
8/25/10 - New global atlas launched showing distribution and prevalence of worm infections.
On 17 August, 2010, the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and the Partnership for Child Development, Imperial College London launched This Wormy World, a series of maps showing the distribution and prevalence of worm infections.
The website provides open-access maps of the distribution of soil-transmitted helminth infections and schistosomiasis. Three types of maps are presented for countries where these infections occur: (i) a Survey Data Map showing the prevalence of infection based on survey data; (ii) a Predictive Risk Map showing the probability that infection prevalence warrants mass drug administration (MDA), according to recommended WHO thresholds; and (iii) a Control Planning Map showing which districts require MDA treatment or where further surveys would be helpful in defining risk.
CWW congratulates Dr. Simon Brooker, one of our MAC members, and this team for leading the development of This Wormy World.
